Create a graphic, high-end pixel stretch effect in Photoshop using nothing but the rarely-used Single Column Marquee tool and Transform. This tutorial walks through three examples — a still portrait, a runner in motion, and a small object — each finished with a Warp for a soft fade and a gradient layer mask for full control.

THE STEPS
1. Select your subject, then duplicate the layer twice with Cmd/Ctrl+J
2. Select the middle layer and grab a single column with the Single Column Marquee tool
3. Transform the selection (Cmd/Ctrl+T) and stretch it out by Cmd/Ctrl-clicking a handle
4. Right-click the transform and choose Warp to fade and shape the stretch
5. Add a layer mask to the stretched layer and use the gradient tool (foreground to transparent) to fade it in
6. Repeat on a moving subject, using their forward foot or edge as the stretch point
7. For objects, use the Object Selection tool to grab a rectangle around the item first
