Learn how to eliminate ugly edge fringing on any subject using clipping masks in Photoshop. If your layer masks look great but your cutouts still have halos, the mask isn't the problem! We'll show you a powerful, non-destructive cloning and brushing technique that delivers flawless, professional selections every single time.

Most people blame their layer mask when a cutout still has fringing around hair or fur, but the mask is usually fine. The real fix is a clipping mask: clone stamping or brushing in real detail on a layer clipped to your subject, so it's only visible exactly where your subject is. No AI required.

THE STEPS
1. Remove the background with your contextual taskbar, then add a solid color fill layer behind your subject to reveal fringing
2. Check your layer mask in black-and-white view to confirm the mask itself is clean
3. Create a new layer and clip it to your subject (Alt/Option-click between layers, or Cmd/Ctrl+Alt+G) so it's only visible where your subject is
4. Use the Clone Stamp tool (set to Current & Below) to sample hair or fur from inside your subject and clone it out toward the edge
5. Use the Brush tool with a sampled color for finer, individual-hair detail where needed
6. For curved edges, clone detail onto its own layer, then use Transform and Warp to fit it to the shape
7. Compare your before and after with the clipping mask layers toggled on and off
