## Caption

The design for the 9/11 Memorial was selected through the largest open competition in history. The final design, “Reflecting Absence” — created by architects Michael Arad and Peter Walker — transformed Ground Zero with two massive waterfalls where the Twin Towers once stood. Surrounding the eight-acre plaza are 400 white oak trees — and one charred Callery pear tree recovered from the ruins. Known as the "Survivor Tree," it stands as a lasting symbol of New York City's resilience and strength.

Explore the story of New York from the end of the 20th century through the first quarter of the 21st—one of the most dramatic, demanding, and transformational periods in the city’s history—in the two-part continuation of Ric Burns’ landmark series: "New York: A Documentary Film.”

Premiering Monday, September 21 and Tuesday, September 22 at 9pm on PBS (check local listings), pbs.org and the PBS App.
