Benedict Arnold — along with Ethan Allen — captured Fort Ticonderoga in 1775 for the American patriots— but what happened next to Arnold, who later switched to the British side?

In 1777, British General John Burgoyne launched a campaign to crush the American revolutionaries by seizing New York’s waterways and splitting the colonies. The result was a brutal campaign marked by costly military mistakes, reluctant German troops "rented out" to the British crown, and the murder of Jane McCrea—a local woman whose death united and fired up patriot forces.

That invasion collided with American forces at the Battle of Saratoga, where Benedict Arnold became the true hero on the field — saving the Revolution and securing America’s alliance with France. However, after being repeatedly passed over for promotion, a bitter Arnold began setting himself on a dark path toward treason and his loyalty began to shift.

Part two of the four-part program "Paths of Rebellion: New York in the Revolution" (1976) is from the THIRTEEN Vault.
