On the day after the 125th anniversary of one of the most important events in Buffalo’s history, CHS was more than proud to welcome our nation’s 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt, who spoke to and with students in the Madden Center for Global Learning.

Teddy Roosevelt’s visit came via a renowned reenactor Joe Wiegand, who was in Buffalo to take part in ceremonies Monday at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site, just down Delaware Avenue from our campus.

A reenactment saw Wiegand’s Roosevelt take the Oath of Office in the historic Wilcox Mansion where the historic occurrence took place on September 14, 1901, the day President William McKinley died, eight days after being shot.

History teacher Justin Siuta arranged for the President to visit CHS, where he shared with students many stories not only about his being inaugurated in Buffalo, but of his life in New York and Washington, D.C.

He spoke of his “bully pulpit” to “speak softly and carry a big stick” to helping save the sport of football to being the namesake of the Teddy Bear to being “the man in the arena.” (Plus there were a few exclamations of “bully!” while taking photos after his talk).

Wiegand has appeared as Roosevelt at events across the country and has been featured in many productions, including on The History Channel. More at teddyrooseveltshow.com

On Monday, CHS joined the Erie County Historical Commission and the TR Inaugural National Historic Site in placing a memorial wreath at the site where President William McKinley died on September 14, 1901. Canisius students placed the wreath at the historic marker on our campus that recognizes the Milburn House, which once stood at the corner of West Ferry Street and Delaware Avenue.
