On the 125th anniversary of one of the most important events in Buffalo’s history, CHS was proud to join the Erie County Historical Commission and the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in placing a memorial wreath at the site where President William McKinley died on September 14, 1901, eight days after being shot.

Canisius students and history teacher Justin Siuta helped mark the date today by placing the wreath at the historic marker on our campus that recognizes the Milburn House, which once stood at the corner of West Ferry Street and Delaware Avenue.

The wreath placement was just one of several commemoration events on the anniversary of the tragic death of President McKinley and the inauguration of President Theodore Roosevelt (which occurred just down Delaware Avenue).

The Milburn House fell into disrepair in the decades that followed McKinley’s passing, with a 1907 fire destroying much of the house at 1168 Delaware Ave. In 1919, the home was renovated and transformed the structure into an eight-apartment complex. Canisius purchased the building in 1948 as a home for Jesuits, but it had very much become dilapidated and CHS demolished the house in 1957. Montante Academic Hall was added to the south end of the CHS campus in 2009. 

The historic marker was refurbished and repainted in 2024 by CHS students of Mr. Siuta in a project partnership with the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site.

The reproductions of historical photographs showing the Milburn House and other scenes are part of the CHS History Department's archives.
