24 hours before they take on a titan of high school football in Ohio, here is a special look at the sights, sounds, touchdowns and big plays of CHS Football’s season-opening victory. 

Head coach Kraig Kurzanski ’84 and the Crusaders put forth a dominant defensive effort while Elijah Kimble ‘27 ran for four touchdowns during a resounding 41-14 victory over Section VI power Health Sciences at the outstanding season-opening Dick Gallagher Kickoff Classic presented by @wnyathletics.

Canisius took a 28-0 halftime lead as Kimble had three rushing touchdowns and a momentum-changing interception on defense. 

Kimble, who won last year’s Connolly Cup as Western New York’s most outstanding player and committed to Syracuse University this summer, moved up one spot on Western New York’s all-time rushing and touchdown lists, which are both led by Jehuu Caulcrick of Clymer (6,559 yards, 101 TDs, 1999-2002).

Kimble now has 5,556 yards and 81 touchdowns. He moved past Wade Turner of Lackawanna (5,490, 1995-98) into third place on the all-time rushing list. Second on the list is Dustin Bowser of Southwestern (2001-03) with 5,883. 

Kimble also moved past Aaron Wahler (Cleveland Hill, 2015-18) into fifth place on the all-time WNY touchdown list, behind Caulcrick (101), Reggie Garner (90, Cardinal O’Hara, 2004-07), revor Barry (87, Iroquois, 2019-21) and Jeff Tundo ( 83, Orchard Park, 2006-08).

Canisius plays at Massillon – the top-ranked team in Ohio and No. 41 in the country – in its Week Two matchup on Friday night.
