Last week, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger restored the voting rights of roughly 66,000 Virginians with past felony convictions. This action reverses the restrictive policies of the state’s previous administration and begins to undo Virginia’s Jim Crow-era voting ban.

The historic announcement came on the very same day that we hosted our Civic Power convening with over 120 voting rights advocates from across the country in Richmond, Virginia.

While this announcement is a massive win for democracy, executive action alone is only a temporary fix. In November, Virginians will have the opportunity to vote on a landmark constitutional amendment that would permanently end the state's lifetime voting ban and automatically restore voting rights to citizens as soon as they leave prison. The change would restore voting rights to nearly 200,000 people, marking one of the most significant expansions of democratic access in the state’s history.
