I had a severe infection… and one of the things that shocked people around me was that I wasn’t in the amount of pain they expected.
My face was visibly swollen, something was clearly wrong, but I remember thinking: “Why don’t I feel worse?”
A lot of people are familiar with hypersensitivity, but did you know there’s also hyposensitivity?
Some autistic people experience sensory input differently, meaning our brains may not always register certain signals, including pain the same way others do.
For me, this has looked like:
✨ Not realizing something is wrong until it becomes more serious
✨ Pushing through discomfort because I don’t notice it right away
✨ Having a harder time recognizing my body’s warning signs
✨ Realizing I need to intentionally check in with myself instead of waiting for my body to “scream”
This doesn’t mean autistic people don’t feel pain. It means our nervous system may process and communicate those signals differently.
For years, I thought I was just “bad at listening to my body.”
Now I understand that I wasn’t ignoring my body… I was learning how my body communicates with me. 🧠
Autism doesn’t always look like what people expect. Sometimes it looks like feeling “fine” while your body is asking for help.
