California USA Wrestling’s Grass Roots Officials & Volunteers Initiative has been approved for expansion for the 2026–2027 membership year. The purpose of this program is simple: get more people from our wrestling families involved in the sport as officials and volunteers. Each California USA Wrestling Local Association will receive 12 Mat Officials Packets to help recruit, train and equip new officials. Each packet includes an official shirt, whistle, and red/green wristlets so participants have what they need to begin working Local Association events and continue developing toward larger State events. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? Wrestling cannot happen without people willing to step up and help. This initiative is designed to grow the number of trained officials throughout California, create opportunities for parents, former wrestlers, coaches and other members of our wrestling community to become involved, and strengthen the connection between our Local Associations and California USA Wrestling State Championships. The goal is not simply to hand out equipment. The goal is to develop people, build stronger Local Associations and create the next generation of California wrestling officials and volunteers. HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED? Contact your Local Association Director. Tell them you are interested in participating in the Grass Roots Officials & Volunteers Initiative and becoming a Mat Official. Your Local Association can provide information about upcoming opportunities, training and how you can begin working events in your area. The program is already being put to work, including recently with Mount Diablo Wrestling Association (MDWA), and we want to see it growing throughout all of California.
