Grantee Spotlight: Advocates for Recovery Colorado

Since 2001, Advocates for Recovery Colorado (AFRC) has served as a face and voice for the recovery community, advocating for people affected by substance use and working to reduce stigma and inequity. AFRC is Colorado's oldest and largest Recovery Community Organization. Beginning around 2010, AFRC expanded its work to include peer recovery support, becoming a leader in training and employing peer recovery coaches and creating welcoming spaces where people can find connection, encouragement, and support without judgment.

With support from Caring for Denver, AFRC is expanding Recover Together, increasing access to peer recovery coaching, family support, and recovery community events across Denver. Participants work one-on-one with peer recovery coaches to create personalized recovery wellness plans, connect to resources like housing, employment, and healthcare, and strengthen the skills and relationships that support long-term recovery. AFRC is also growing its evidence-based Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) program, helping families affected by substance use learn practical strategies to support loved ones while caring for their own well-being. AFRC's cultural program also connects Spanish-speaking community members with bilingual and bicultural peers who understand the unique experiences and cultural considerations that can shape a person's recovery journey.

AFRC also advocates for the recovery community, including through its annual Recovery Advocacy Day at the Colorado State Capitol, which helps community members learn about the legislative process and find ways to make their voices heard.

Want to learn more? Meet AFRC and hundreds of other recovery organizations at the 2026 Rally for Recovery on Saturday, September 19, from 12–4 p.m. at Cheesman Park.
