What are your thoughts ? She thought she was in India. Canadian law reminded her she isn’t. 🇨🇦

A case involving Surrey landlord Raj Tiwana has gone viral after videos appeared to show a confrontation with her tenant, followed by police arriving and arresting the landlord.

What makes this story bigger than one landlord-tenant dispute is the attitude behind it.

You can bring your culture, your religion, your values and your traditions with you when you move abroad — but you cannot bring your own version of the law.

If there is a dispute with a tenant, there are legal processes. If you believe someone is violating a rental agreement, you go through the proper authorities. You don’t allegedly enter their space, threaten them or get physical.

And that’s the important difference.

Canada doesn’t care whether you’re a landlord, tenant, immigrant, citizen, man or woman — if the law is broken, the law applies.

Some people online are framing this around vegetarianism/beef, while others say the underlying dispute was about the property, BBQ and tenancy. Either way, the lesson is the same:

The internet is full of claims about what happened, so let the investigation and courts establish the facts.

But one thing is clear: when you live abroad, respect the country, respect its laws, and understand your rights — and the rights of others.

Because Canada isn’t India.
And “I am the landlord” is not a license to do whatever you want. 🇨🇦
