## Caption

This extremely rare ritual wine vessel originating from the Zhou dynasty, 10 century B.C, is on view at #SothebysNewYork as a highlight of the upcoming Chinese Art sale. 

Of the small number of such vessels fashioned after animals, few are as rare and magnificent as those of elephant form. It’s one of only two known vessels of this form, and would have been considered fundamental to the ritual life of the Zhou royal court. Three millennia after its creation, it exudes a sense of silence and awe that feels still striking today.
