A completely paralysed man with ALS was able to communicate again after researchers implanted two micro-electrode arrays into the motor cortex of his brain.⁠

Using a brain computer interface, he learned to generate ‘yes’ and ‘no’ responses before slowly spelling out full sentences at around one character per minute.⁠

Among his requests were listening to Tool “loud”, having a head massage from his mum, ordering curry and, brilliantly, asking for a beer.⁠

He was also able to communicate with his wife and young son, writing: “I love my cool son.”⁠
