Immigrants, some of them undocumented, form the backbone of many of the region’s key industries, from healthcare and tourism to construction and small business.

They make up a large part of the workforce in seven industries that together represent nearly 35% of the region's annual economic output of more than $250 billion, based on federal data. 

Roughly 3,000 Long Islanders have been apprehended by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as of August 6, based on federal records analyzed by Newsday. Stepped-up immigration enforcement would damage Long Island’s economy over the long term, an economics professor said.
