There’s more than one way to see South Dakota. 🚗

This time, we’re taking the road less traveled. Through small towns with big stories, quiet lakes, wide-open prairie, local history, Indigenous culture and a few wonderfully weird roadside stops along the way.

Six days. A completely different side of South Dakota.

Day one starts in Sioux Falls before heading north to Palisades State Park and Brookings. Let the road trip begin.

Start in Sioux Falls with some time to explore before hitting the road.

Trade city streets for the pink quartzite cliffs and trails of Palisades State Park.

End the day in Brookings with a little local arts and culture before settling in for the night.

Day two takes you from Brookings to Watertown before heading into the woods at Sica Hollow State Park.

Spend some time out on the water in Watertown, then trade the lake for the trails at Sica Hollow State Park.

Day three: Set out for Fort Sisseton Historic State Park before continuing on to Aberdeen.

Step into South Dakota history at Fort Sisseton Historic State Park, where the buildings and grounds preserve a former frontier army outpost.

Continue to Aberdeen and spend the evening discovering the local character, arts and attractions around town.

Day four heads west through Faulkton before following the road to Pierre and Fort Pierre.

Stop for the larger-than-life murals in Faulkton, then keep going to Pierre for an evening along the Missouri River.

Cross the river to historic Fort Pierre and spend some time exploring one of South Dakota’s oldest communities.

Day five is all about taking the scenic route from Pierre toward Chamberlain.

Follow the Native American Scenic Byway through wide-open landscapes before stopping at Dignity: Of Earth & Sky overlooking the Missouri River.

For the final day, point the car toward Mitchell—with a couple of only-in-South-Dakota stops still ahead.

First up: Mitchell’s World’s Only Corn Palace, where colorful murals made from corn, grains and grasses turn an entire building into a work of art. 🌽
