## Caption

Carolina Herrera met Andy Warhol in the late 1970s, before launching her fashion house. At a dinner in 1979, Warhol admired the Van Cleef & Arpels minaudière she was carrying and proposed a trade: the bag in exchange for her portrait.

Their friendship extended across New York’s social and creative life. Warhol documented many of the moments they shared, photographing Herrera at dinners, galas and parties, as well as at Herrera fashion shows, including her first presentation at the Metropolitan Club in 1981. At the Factory, he captured her in a formal portrait sitting, creating the Polaroids that became the basis for a series of painted portraits.
