Etched into AlUla’s sandstone cliffs, thousands of inscriptions have outlived the people and civilizations that created them—forming an extraordinary record of lives, journeys and beliefs spanning millennia.

Through the voices of two community members, this episode explores AlUla’s remarkable inscriptional landscape, including Jabal Ikmah, often described as an “open-air library.” Home to nearly 300 inscriptions created by the ancient Dadanite and Lihyanite civilizations, Jabal Ikmah was inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World International Register in 2023 in recognition of its global significance.

AlUla’s carvings are more than markings in stone; they bear testimony to centuries of human presence. Each inscription captures a moment: a name, a belief or a passage through this land. Together, they form an archive written by many hands, preserved within the desert landscape and now safeguarded as part of humanity’s shared memory.
