zatelithe is an Afro-Colombian artist, musician, and the founder of negrofestco. Zate has been using street art, food, and music to share Afro-Colombian history and culture with visitors since 2007. Now he’s sharing his favorite local spots with us.

Zate’s tip: grab some fresh arepas to eat at home. Arepa paisa (white corn) is Medellín’s classic thin and plain version (traditionally smothered with butter and cheese at breakfast). Arepa de choclo (yellow corn) is a sweeter, softer version, typically topped with melted cheese.

The ground floor of Plaza Minorista is lined with fruits you may not recognize. Ask a vendor “¿puedo probarlo?” They’ll usually let you taste it before you buy.

Pitaya (dragonfruit) shows up twice a year at local markets. Peel it like an orange and take a bite (just be careful how much you consume, it’s known as nature’s laxative).

Tattoos, piercings, and single-origin coffee, all under one roof. Resident tattoo artists will work with you to build a custom piece or show you their selection of flash (walk-ins welcome).

Hungry? Grab a cold brew and try their “Torta de Almojábana,” a mix of guava paste, cheese, and Colombian cheese bread while you wait.

Locals still treat Belén Park like a town square: church on one side, shade trees and benches on the other. Part of the city’s protected green network, the park’s canopy trees protect migratory paths for birds keeping the square at cool temperatures (and the birdsong high).
