No. 4 Texas trailed No. 1 Ohio State 23-3 in the fourth quarter before mounting a furious rally in Austin on Saturday night.

Arch Manning got the comeback started with a touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo early in the fourth quarter, cutting into what had been a dominant, near-shutout performance from the Buckeyes through three quarters. Ohio State had built its 20-point cushion behind Julian Sayin's 278 passing yards and Jeremiah Smith's huge night: 8 catches for 164 yards and a score, the kind of showing that had Smith finally looking like the All-American talent everyone expected against Texas after being held in check in two previous meetings.

But Texas kept chipping away. Smothers punched in a touchdown with 7:14 left to make it a game, and Ohio State had a chance to put it away, driving into position for what would have been a clinching field goal. Kicker Connor Hawkins, who'd already made three field goals on the night, missed from 45 yards, opening the door for Texas's final possession.

That's when Smothers delivered the knockout blow — a 1-yard run where he leaped over the pile at the goal line with just 25 seconds remaining, capping the Longhorns' rally from 20 points down. Gil Spetic's extra point, snapped by Tanner Dubuc and held by Michael Chiumento, made it 24-23. Ohio State got one final shot, but Sayin's desperation heave on the last play was intercepted, and Texas players stormed the field.

The win pushed Texas to 2-0 and is being called one of the biggest regular-season victories of Steve Sarkisian's tenure in Austin, and a signature moment for Manning, who had been under pressure to live up to his Heisman-caliber recruiting hype. Ohio State fell to 1-1.
