Marcel Reed threw three touchdown passes, and the defense scored twice in the fourth quarter as 10th-ranked Texas A&M pulled away late for a 48-20 win over Arizona State, though it was far from smooth sailing for most of the afternoon.

Texas A&M actually struggled to get going offensively for long stretches. Arizona State gained 200 total yards, 131 through the air, before the Aggies managed their first first down, a Rueben Owens 2-yard touchdown run set up by a muffed Arizona State punt that gave the Aggies a short field. The Sun Devils continued to move the ball well, and Texas A&M led just 17-10 midway through despite being outplayed statistically.

The Aggies started finding their rhythm through the air as the game wore on. Reed connected with Isaiah Horton on a corner fade for a touchdown to make it 24-13 in the third quarter, part of a booming Reed-to-Horton connection the two had been trying to hit for much of the game. Arizona State answered to cut the lead to 31-20 early in the fourth quarter on a Reed... actually on an Arizona State score, but the Aggies pulled away for good from there. Texas A&M's defense delivered the knockout blows. Tyler White fumbled before a punt attempt, and Arizona State recovered at the Texas A&M 34, but on the very next play A&M's T.J. Searcy hit Cutter Boley as he threw, and 261-pound defensive end Marco Jones scooped the deflection and rumbled 55 yards for a touchdown, the Aggies' first defensive score since Will Lee's pick-six the year before. Julio Humphrey added another defensive touchdown late, intercepting Boley and returning it 45 yards to make it 41-20.

Reed finished 15 of 25 passing for 163 yards and three touchdowns in a performance that was inconsistent at times but got the job done. Texas A&M's offense had trouble establishing rhythm for much of the game before the defense took over in crunch time.

The win improved Texas A&M to 2-0 on the season, following a 50-0 win over Missouri State to open the year. Arizona State fell to 1-1, opening Big 12 play next week against Kansas in the Union Jack Classic at Wembley Stadium in London. Texas A&M hosts Kentucky next Saturday.
