A digital model of a fruit-fly brain is now being put to the test with a Rubik’s Cube challenge. 🧠🧩

The experiment uses MaleCNS v1.0, a recently released connectome of an adult male fruit fly containing around 166,700 neurons and 125 million synaptic connections.

Researchers and developers have been turning this mapped neural wiring into interactive computer simulations, with previous experiments placing the digital brain into environments such as Minecraft and other virtual tasks.

But there’s an important distinction behind the viral claim: an actual fruit fly isn’t physically solving a Rubik’s Cube. Instead, software uses a computational simulation based on the fly’s mapped neural connections and links its activity to a digital version of the challenge.

It’s a fascinating example of how a biological connectome can be transformed into a computational system, but it doesn’t mean the simulated fly brain understands the puzzle or is consciously solving it.
