Today in History: Constance Baker Motley, civil rights activist, Manhattan Borough President, and the first Black woman named to a federal judgeship, was born in New Haven, CT, on September 14, 1921. Motley helped dismantle Southern race laws, authored the original complaint in Brown v. Board of Education, and led legal battles to desegregate universities in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. She was the first Black woman to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, winning nine of ten cases, and she represented Martin Luther King Jr., the Freedom Riders, and other leaders jailed during civil rights protests. Before joining the federal bench, she became the first Black woman elected to the New York State Senate.
