I painted NEPO BABY because I have been thinking about feminine inheritance. Not just what we inherit genetically, but the faces, stories, instincts, wounds, wisdom, and strength passed from woman to woman.

Maybe the most valuable inheritance isn’t youth

DID YOU KNOW that Humans are one of only 2 or 3 mammals known to experience menopause? We are unusual in that women can live for decades beyond their reproductive years. It’s very biologically rare! 

What if aging isn’t a diminishment of a woman’s usefulness, but an expansion of it? What if there is an evolutionary intelligence in women remaining—becoming keepers of memory, knowledge, culture, family, and survival?

This painting is on show now in Venice Italy, as part of my solo exhibition MATRICLYSM - presented by crystalbridgesmuseum
