The sound of the drums can be heard through the busy streets of San Diego. Thundering through the business of cars passing, honking, and breaking. 

As you get closer you begin to hear the white noise of the city settle into a melodic rattle. With each twist and turn, hand rattles and the chachayotes sound off and vibrate the air around. 

The headdresses and feathers flaunt their colors on the bright sunny day and bend with the wind. Different families have different feathers for various representations. 

The patterns on the regalia are mesmerizing and breathtaking.

Each color and pattern represent different things and are added for various reasons. But every detail has a purpose, just like every step, stomp, and turn in the dance. 

Danza seems entertaining on the surface level, but there’s much more that goes into this practice/ceremony. If you ever get to attend and listen, you can learn more! 

I don’t want to give away too much information, both as I am still learning but also for the sake of keeping certain practices and knowledge in the community and keeping certain things within the oral nature of storytelling as it has been passed down for generations. I hope these visuals can provide some curiosity and insight for people wanting to connect to the land, to their familial roots, and to the people who care take for the land they are inhabiting. These practices give us strength, medicine, knowledge, and connects us to our surroundings. 

Indigenous people have been here long before colonialism and will be here long after, caring for the land, the animals, and the ecosystem.
