AMALGAM | FEATURED ARTIST — EMMANUEL RUFFO

As part of our ongoing editorial series highlighting selected artists from AMALGAM: Contemporary Jewellery in Hybrid Systems, we introduce Emmanuel Ruffo — an artist, architect, designer and researcher whose practice explores the unstable territory between architecture, computation, artificial intelligence and the aesthetics of failure. 

For more than two decades, Ruffo’s multidisciplinary trajectory has moved across design, technology, research and education. He has served as Head of Design at Domus Academy, founded the Design Marathon in Europe and Digital FAB LAB in Mexico, and developed projects in collaboration with names including Olivetti, Moncler, Ferrari, Alessi and Fendi. 

For AMALGAM, we highlight Children of a Down — an ongoing investigation into error as a generative force. Here, image corruption becomes a creative language: organic fragility collides with synthetic precision, while bodies and surfaces appear as traces suspended between memory and machine, sensation and code. 

Rather than using AI to perfect or reproduce the known, Ruffo creates conditions for systems to distort, fracture and move beyond predetermined outcomes. In his practice, the glitch is not an effect to be corrected. Instability becomes productive, imperfection becomes structural, and failure opens a space for unexpected meaning.
