📍Sólheimajökull Glaciar Pit, Vik, Iceland

Sólheimajökull, the outlet glacier near Vík í Mýrdal in South Iceland, is dotted with striking sinkholes and moulins, deep pits where meltwater has drilled down through the ice, often exposing layers of black volcanic ash mixed with vivid blue glacial ice. These pits aren’t a fixed feature; they’re a visible symptom of a glacier in rapid retreat. As global temperatures climb, Sólheimajökull is melting at one of the fastest rates on Earth, losing roughly 60 meters of length every year and having shed about 2.2 square kilometers of its mass over the past century. This accelerated melt widens the pits and sinkholes, feeds the growing glacial lagoon forming at the glacier’s snout, and makes the ice increasingly unstable, so that ice caves and cave ceilings collapse with little warning, and terrain that was solid one season can be a gaping hole the next. Glaciologists point to Sólheimajökull as a textbook example of climate driven glacial loss, and current projections suggest that without a slowdown in warming, many of Iceland’s glaciers, including this one, could vanish entirely within the next century
