The GSAR’s name is its origin story: Government Search and Rescue.

In the early 2000s, Canadian #SearchandRescue Technicians helped shape Marathon’s SAR dive watch around the realities of their work — parachuting, diving, mountaineering, helicopter rescue and operations in the Arctic. The resulting platform went into service with Canadian personnel and became the foundation for the #GSAR.

That history explains the hardware.

A deeply knurled crown and bezel are built to be manipulated with gloves. The unidirectional 60-minute bezel provides a conservative measure of elapsed time underwater. #Tritium gas tubes provide continuous low-light visibility without first being charged by an external light source. A sapphire crystal, screw-down crown and 316L stainless-steel case protect the watch to 300 metres. Inside, a Swiss automatic Sellita SW200-1 runs with Incabloc shock protection.

Even the dial speaks the language of military equipment: dual 12- and 24-hour scales, immediate legibility, and no ambiguity about the information being presented.

The GSAR was built around the requirements of people whose job could begin with a helicopter door opening over cold water.

Twenty-five years later, the assignment hasn’t changed much.
