When Cohen was 4 months old, his parents noticed a lump on his leg. What followed was every parent’s worst nightmare.

After a series of tests and scans, Cohen was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, an extremely rare bone cancer in infants. His parents, Carissa and Jordan, had hoped treatment would be straightforward, but doctors recommended 17 rounds of chemotherapy.

“I thought, ‘It’ll be a surgery and maybe some maintenance chemo or things that can take three months,' but we kept on getting the worst-case scenario,’” Carissa said.

The treatment was grueling for such a young child. As chemotherapy drained his energy and color, donated blood helped bring him back to life. The difference was remarkable. Transfusions brought color back to Cohen’s face, and his parents watched him regain the energy to giggle and play.

Those transfusions carried him through months of treatment until the day he completed his final round of chemotherapy and rang the hospital to signify the milestone.

For Carissa and Jordan, the experience completely changed how they viewed blood donation. Before Cohen’s diagnosis, neither regularly donated blood. Now, they understand firsthand the difference a single donor can make.

Even Jordan’s fear of needles disappeared when he thought about everything his son had endured.

“I got a little pinch and I was like, ‘You need to throw that feeling away because of what your son had to go through,’” he said.

Now a thriving toddler, Cohen spends his days reading books, listening to music, and just being a kid.

“We have this vibrant kid now because he got the care he needed,” Jordan said.
