Morgan Cantrell was counting down the days until she could meet her son. At 36 weeks pregnant, everything looked good. An ultrasound showed her baby was healthy, and she left her appointment with reassurance that all was well. But just one day later, everything changed.

After dinner, Morgan felt a sudden pain and rushed to the bathroom.

“I knew immediately something was wrong,” she said. “My pants were full of blood. When I bent down, I felt something.”

Morgan experienced a placental abruption, a serious complication in which the placenta separates from the uterus before delivery, cutting off the baby’s supply of nutrients and oxygen. In an instant, an ordinary evening became a fight to save both her life and the life of her baby.

At the hospital, doctors moved quickly. Morgan was rushed into an emergency C-section and Baby Callum was born. She needed two units of blood during delivery, and although Callum was healthy, her recovery was far from over.

“Two days later, on Thanksgiving Day, they made a decision to give me a second transfusion,” she said. “I was not recovering well. I had high blood pressure problems, and I passed out twice.”

In total, Morgan lost 2.5 liters of blood — roughly half of the body’s total blood supply — and received four units of lifesaving blood products.

The experience transformed her appreciation for blood donation. She knew donated blood helped patients every day, but suddenly she was one of them, a new mother whose recovery depended on strangers she would never meet.

After recovering, Morgan returned to donate blood herself. It was an emotional moment, made even more meaningful because Callum was by her side.

Morgan now donates with a deeper appreciation for every unit collected and every donor who makes time to give. She knows firsthand that behind every blood donation is the chance for someone else to go home to their family, celebrate another holiday, and watch their child grow up. ❤️
