Mount Pleasant City Commissioner Hanna Demerath proposed a new ordinance to put free menstrual products in City restrooms at the City Commission meeting on Sept. 14.

“This is just the beginning steps to this, but I really think that period poverty in this area is something that isn’t talked about,” said Demerath, “Being in the area that we are at, we have a lot of poverty, and I think it’s easy to overlook how something so small and mundane can actually affect someone's life like this.”

The commission unanimously voted to continue the conversation of free menstrual products. There will be more information given with a presentation from Central Michigan University medical student Harsna Chahal on period poverty and data collected from city employees at the meeting on Sept. 28.
