Bea Miller thinks something may have been lost as growing up online became increasingly public and polished: the freedom to be embarrassing.

While discussing Mr. Peaked in High School at The Lighthouse Brooklyn, Miller reflected on looking back at her own awkward teenage years and said she has come to embrace the parts that once made her cringe.

“I kind of embrace that there was a bit more room to be embarrassing when I was younger,” Miller said.

She added that she sometimes feels for kids growing up online now, when so much of what they do can immediately be captured and scrutinized in a way that felt different during her own adolescence.

The conversation with Miller, pioneering internet artist Molly Soda and creative director Justin Moran repeatedly returned to internet nostalgia and the freedom of an era when documenting yourself online could feel less curated.

Republic Records and °1824 hosted the first-listen event before playing Miller’s upcoming 13-track album in full. Mr. Peaked in High School arrives Friday, September 18.
