Want to hear something wholesome and disturbing at the same time? On June 3, more than 3,000 volunteers cleaned up nearly 100,000 pounds of litter for Clean the Bay Day.

There were approximately 200 sites across the commonwealth that participated, including Richmond, Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore, Northern Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley, and Virginia State Parks.

Together, the groups cleaned more than 300 miles of the state’s:
⛱️ Beaches
🚲 Parks
🏝️ Shorelines
🎣 Streams
🚣‍♀️ Rivers
🤿 Lakes

“It’s wonderful to see how this iconic event brings people together to make a positive impact in their communities. Parks, beaches, and waterways across Virginia are cleaner now thanks to the work of thousands of volunteers,” said Lisa Renée Jennings, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s grassroots coordinator, in a media statement. “These cumulative efforts contribute to healthier rivers and streams, and a cleaner Chesapeake Bay.” 

While the group discovered things that are (unfortunately) commonly found trash items—like plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans, plastic bags, and cigarette butts—there were a few…er…”larger” surprises as well. A mini dirt bike, a treadmill, a toilet, and even a kitchen sink were among the more unique items recovered.
