Arizona just made the consequences for motorcycle lane splitting a lot more serious.

A new law that took effect Saturday reclassifies lane splitting, when a motorcyclist rides between lanes of moving traffic, as reckless driving. The move was already illegal in Arizona, but it can now lead to a Class 2 misdemeanor and a license suspension of up to 90 days.

A second reckless driving conviction within two years can bring even harsher penalties, including possible jail time.

Lane filtering is still legal in Arizona. Motorcyclists can ride between stopped cars on roads posted at 45 MPH or less, as long as they stay at 15 MPH or below. Lane filtering is not allowed on freeways.

What do you think about the new law?
