A Mesa family says they lost control over what happened to their husband and father after he passed away, and two months later, they’re still trying to understand how it happened.

Raymond Wood Jr., 54, passed away on July 9 at HonorHealth Four Peaks Medical Center in Mesa.

His wife of 32 years, Leslie, says the family contacted several mortuaries before choosing where they wanted Raymond taken. But when she called the hospital to coordinate everything, she says she was initially told they did not know where his body was.

Then she learned another funeral home, one the family says they never selected, had already picked him up.

By the time the mistake was discovered, Raymond had already been embalmed, meaning his body had been chemically preserved and prepared for viewing.

His wife says it was also done without his dentures, something she says he never went without.

The family says the funeral home acknowledged that the transfer should not have happened and arranged to move Raymond to the mortuary they actually chose.

HonorHealth told Arizona’s Family that the transfer was arranged “based on the information available at the time” and said its process is to work with the family in situations like this.

Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services declined to discuss the specific case with the media. A spokesperson also said the state investigated the family’s complaint and found insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations.

Raymond’s family ultimately chose cremation so they could keep his remains close, but they say they still want answers about how his body ended up at the wrong funeral home in the first place.
