The town of Sedona is named after a woman most people have never heard of.

Sedona Arabella Miller was born in Missouri in 1877. According to her family, even the name “Sedona” was simply something her mother made up.

She married Theodore Carlton “T.C.” Schnebly in 1897.

A few years later, the family moved west to Oak Creek. T.C. bought land there, and the Schneblys built a home, planted an orchard and opened a small store.

By 1902, around 55 people lived in the settlement, but there was still no post office.

T.C. applied for one.

He first suggested Schnebly Station.

Rejected.

Then Oak Creek Crossing.

Rejected again. Both names were considered too long.

His brother suggested something much simpler:

Sedona.

Washington approved the name on June 26, 1902.

Three years later, the Schneblys lost their daughter in an accident and moved back to Missouri.

They returned to Arizona in 1931 and found something incredible.

The community still carried Sedona’s name, and the road T.C. helped build toward Flagstaff still carried the Schnebly name.

Sedona Schnebly spent the rest of her life there. She passed away in 1950 and is buried in the town named after her.

Sedona didn’t officially incorporate as a city until 1988.

Meaning the name Sedona was already 86 years old before Sedona officially became a city.

One of Arizona’s most famous places was named after a Missouri farm wife who never asked for it.
