All roads lead back to SOPHIE 🕊️

It’s hard to look at where alternative pop, electronic music and the underground have gone over the past decade without eventually tracing something back to SOPHIE. SOPHIE created a production language that sounded almost impossible when it first arrived, turning metallic textures, distorted synths and heavily manipulated vocals into something that could still feel undeniably like pop.

SOPHIE’s work with Charli XCX helped push those ideas even further, while the solo music showed an entire generation just how little the “rules” of production actually mattered 🎹

SOPHIE tragically passed away in 2021 at just 34 years old, but the future she helped imagine is still unfolding. From artists like 2hollis, Jane Remover, Frost Children and underscores to countless producers experimenting with the boundaries between pop, rap and electronic music today, pieces of that influence are everywhere.

Some artists change the sound of their generation, but SOPHIE helped give the next one a new set of possibilities. Rest in peace 💔🕊️
