Google DeepMind has launched the DeepMind Institute, an in house think tank focused on the safety, policy and societal implications of artificial general intelligence.

That alone says something about where the industry believes this is heading.

The conversation is shifting from “Can we build AGI?” to “What happens if we do?”

The Institute will examine questions around safety, employment, governance, economics and the broader consequences of increasingly capable AI systems.

The most important signal may be the timing.

Frontier labs are no longer treating AGI purely as a research milestone. They are beginning to build institutions around the assumption that its arrival could create consequences far beyond the technology itself.

The race is no longer only about intelligence. It is about whether society can adapt fast enough to it.
