No. 4 Texas just pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in program history.

For three quarters, No. 1 Ohio State looked completely in control in Austin.

The Buckeyes forced turnovers on each of Texas’ first two possessions and held the Longhorns to just five yards of offense in the first quarter. Julian Sayin found Jeremiah Smith for a touchdown just before halftime, sending Ohio State into the locker room with a 20–3 lead.

Things got even worse for Texas in the third.

Ohio State added another field goal to stretch the lead to 23–3, and with one quarter remaining, the nation’s No. 1 team appeared to be cruising toward another massive road victory.

Then everything changed.

Arch Manning led Texas on a 91-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo. The Longhorns followed it with another 72-yard drive, capped by a Hollywood Smothers touchdown to make it 23–17.

Ohio State had a chance to essentially put the game away, but Connor Hawkins missed a 45-yard field goal.

Manning got the ball back with one last opportunity.

Texas marched 73 yards in 12 plays, converting multiple crucial downs before Smothers punched it in from one yard out with only 25 seconds remaining.

Texas 24. Ohio State 23.

Ohio State got one final possession, but Sayin’s desperation pass was intercepted to complete the collapse.

Manning finished with 195 passing yards and a touchdown, while Smothers rushed for 74 yards and scored twice. Sayin threw for 278 yards, and Jeremiah Smith dominated with eight catches for 164 yards and a touchdown.

The comeback was historic.

Before Saturday, AP No. 1 teams had gone 197–0 since 2004 when leading by at least 20 points in the fourth quarter. Texas became the first team in that span to erase the deficit and win. It also matched the second-largest fourth-quarter comeback in Longhorn history.

Down 23–3.

Three fourth-quarter touchdowns.

And in front of more than 105,000 people in Austin, Texas completed an all-time comeback against the No. 1 team in the country.
