Today is day zero.

A rule that strips away the longstanding regulatory definition of “harm” under the Endangered Species Act takes effect today — threatening a safeguard that, for decades, recognized a basic truth: Destroying the habitat wildlife needs to survive can kill wildlife, too. 

In plain terms, the Act has been significantly weakened. 

It’s a dark day for endangered species. But we have been here before.

Just this year, the Center won a major court victory overturning four provisions of the Trump administration’s 2019 Endangered Species Act regulations that significantly weakened the act.

The Center for Biological Diversity was built for moments like this. 

For nearly 40 years, the Center has stood firm for plants and animals at risk of extinction. Through precedent-setting legal actions, we’ve secured lifesaving protection for more than 770 species and more than half a billion acres of protected critical habitat. From tiny insects and freshwater mussels to wolves and whales, we run to the fight when extinction is on the line. 

We will not back down. We must combat despair with action.
