I’ve been trying to decide lately what’s the worst part about being hurt and I think I’ve landed on it.

It’s the guilt.

There’s lots that’s jarring about getting injured, but to me there’s nothing heavier than the daily guilt. I find I either feel like a burden on the people around me, or I hop around to help as much as I can and feel guilty for messing up my recovery plan. It’s a lose/lose that hits me hard.

Candidly, it’s my biggest fear. Being unable to help and support others around me makes me feel incredibly small and kills me a bit every day. I’ve known this about myself for a long time and it’s actually been a primary driver for how I live my life.

I’ve made many decisions in my life because I want to be able to support the people around me when they need it. Physically, emotionally, intellectually, however. I want to be able to show up. That’s primarily what has motivated me for as long as I can remember do grind when it’s hard and keep building.

I spent some time this week thinking about how our biggest fears can actually become our greatest motivations. And how, with intention, we can use fear as a compass to direct ourselves towards the areas we need to improve.

I worry about being underprepared, and so I prepare. I always have. I look forward to being more helpful again soon, but in the meantime maybe I’ll explore some other fears and insecurities and see what else I can learn and improve on.
