Not sure whether your old IRS debt is close to expiring? My team can help you understand your situation before you choose a resolution strategy. Free. No obligation. No judgment.

Does IRS tax debt go away after 10 years? The IRS generally has 10 years from the date it assesses the tax to collect, but certain events can pause or extend that period. Logan Allec, CPA, explains the collection statute expiration date (CSED), common tolling events, and why you should verify your actual deadline before deciding how to handle old tax debt.

CLARIFICATIONS
• In the opening example, a 2015 return filed and assessed in 2016 would generally have an initial 2026 collection deadline, before any suspensions or extensions.
• For installment agreements, the pending REQUEST can suspend the collection clock. An approved payment plan does not automatically suspend it throughout repayment. Rejection, termination, appeals, and certain written extensions have separate rules.
• For offers in compromise, the clock is generally suspended while a processable offer is pending, for 30 days after rejection, and during a timely appeal of that rejection.
• The 10-year period is not a guarantee that every old tax balance disappears on the same date. Separate assessments can have different deadlines; special rules can apply to timely court actions and certain levies. State collection rules can differ.
