What are we teaching young riders to value? Ribbons, championships, and competitive goals can be meaningful parts of our industry. But when results become the primary way we recognize success, we risk overlooking so much of what makes a great horseman or horsewoman.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Stefanie Mazer encourages us to think more broadly about the messages we send young riders. Curiosity, resilience, thoughtful horsemanship, empathy, sportsmanship, and a commitment to horse welfare all deserve to be recognized alongside what happens in the show ring.
