42 years ago today, Alphaville released ‘Forever Young.’

Marian Gold wrote the lyrics for 'Forever Young,' composing the track alongside bandmates Bernhard Lloyd and Frank Mertens, with Colin Pearson, Wolfgang Loos, and Andreas Budde producing at Berlin's Studio 54. WEA released it September 20, 1984 as the third single from Alphaville's debut album of the same name, following the band's earlier breakthrough hit, "Big in Japan." An interesting quirk emerged during recording: the band deliberately chose a British-style pronunciation for the word "dance" in the opening line to give the song a distinctly English feel, though Gold occasionally slipped back into the American pronunciation during performances.

Blending synth-pop with new wave textures, the song carries a wistful, almost mournful tone beneath its anthemic melody, reflecting on youth, mortality, and the passage of time in a way that stood apart from much of the era's more upbeat synth-driven pop. AllMusic later singled it out alongside "Big in Japan" and "Fallen Angel" as one of the standout tracks from an album it called a genuine classic of the genre, praising Gold's vocal range for giving the record worldwide appeal beyond its German origins. Brian Ward directed the accompanying music video, shot at England's Holloway Sanatorium, depicting a surreal scene of people from all walks of life awakening and passing through a glowing portal.

The song became a significant hit across Scandinavia and German-speaking Europe, though it found only modest traction in the US and UK despite three separate American single releases. Its cultural staying power has proven remarkable, going on to be covered by numerous artists over the decades and remaining one of Alphaville's most enduring and frequently referenced songs, helping cement 'Forever Young' as one of the definitive synth-pop albums of the 1980s.
