13 years ago, Katy Perry released “Dark Horse” featuring Juicy J.

Sarah Hudson joined Katy Perry for a writing session in Perry's hometown of Santa Barbara, drawing inspiration from the 1996 film 'The Craft' to shape 'Dark Horse' around a darker, more mysterious concept than much of her earlier work. Perry and Hudson co-wrote the track alongside producers Max Martin, Dr. Luke, and Cirkut, who handled all of the instrumentation and programming, before Juicy J was brought in afterward to contribute a guest verse. It first surfaced digitally as a promotional single from Perry's fourth studio album, 'Prism,' after fans voted to release it ahead of the album itself.

Blending trap, hip-hop, and electropop, the track carries a warning-laced tone, with Perry cautioning a would-be suitor about the risks of falling for her, framed through witchy, cautionary imagery that matched the song's supernatural inspiration. Three months after its digital debut, Capitol Records issued it as the album's third official single, and it went on to top the Hot 100 even before its accompanying music video had finished rolling out, prompting Perry to call it the most unexpected chart-topper of her career at the time.

The single became Perry's ninth number-one hit and Juicy J's first, spending 22 weeks inside the Hot 100's top ten and 57 weeks on the chart overall, making it her longest-charting song both in the top ten and across the full chart. It ranked as the second-best-performing song of 2014 in the US, and its Egyptian-themed video later won Best Female Video at that year's MTV Video Music Awards, cementing 'Dark Horse' as one of the signature hits from the 'Prism' era.
