14 years ago today, Zendaya released her self-titled debut album.

Mick Schultz produced the bulk of 'Zendaya,' the actress and singer's self-titled debut studio album, recording it across a wide network of studios spanning Malibu, Los Angeles, North Hollywood, Burbank, and New York City between December 2012 and May 2013. She signed with Hollywood Records that August 2012, not long after wrapping her run on Disney Channel's 'Shake It Up,' and began shaping the project shortly after, working alongside a broad producer lineup that also included Jason Evigan, The Monsters & Strangerz, Nick Jonas, and Jonas Jeberg.

Blending electropop with touches of dubstep, R&B, and urban music, the eleven-track project explored heartbreak and young love, with Zendaya describing her overall sound at the time as pop music carrying an urban edge. Lead single 'Replay' arrived that July, premiering first before its official release and eventually earning her a New Artist of the Month distinction on 'The Today Show' that fall. Critics responded warmly to the album's polish, praising the production even as its themes leaned into familiar teen-pop territory for a young star transitioning from acting into music.

The album debuted at number 51 on the Billboard 200, selling 7,000 copies in its opening week, a modest showing amid a particularly crowded fall release season dominated by bigger established names. To support the project, Zendaya launched her first headlining run, the Swag It Out Tour, playing over 20 dates across state fairs and theaters throughout 2013, giving fans an early look at the sound and stage presence that would carry into her later, far more expansive career.
