16 years ago today, Selena Gomez released 'A Year Without Rain.'

Toby Gad wrote and produced the eurodance-tinged title track 'A Year Without Rain' with lyricist Lindy Robbins, recording it at Strawberrybee Studios in Los Angeles as the second single from Selena Gomez & the Scene's sophomore album of the same name. The full record itself arrived shortly after, spanning studios stretching from Los Angeles and New York to Budapest, Hungary, with a wide producer roster that included Rock Mafia's Tim James and Antonina Armato, Kevin Rudolf, Jonas Jeberg, and RedOne.

Gomez described the direction of the new material as noticeably more mature than the band's debut, 'Kiss & Tell,' leaning further into dance-pop rather than the pop-rock sound that had defined their earlier work. Following the album's release, the group promoted it through a packed run of television appearances, including 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show,' 'Good Morning America,' and 'Lopez Tonight,' while also joining the KIIS FM Jingle Ball tour alongside artists like Katy Perry and Bruno Mars. That same fall, they kicked off the A Year Without Rain Tour, a larger production than their earlier live outings, with support from Allstar Weekend and Christina Grimmie, who'd also contributed background vocals to the record.

The album received largely positive reviews, with critics pointing to it as evidence Gomez had moved well beyond her earlier Disney-pop reputation. The title track itself earned a live performance at the 2011 People's Choice Awards, where Gomez and the Scene took home the award for Favorite Breakout Artist, helping cement the album's role in establishing the group as a genuine commercial force beyond their television-star origins.
