17 years ago today, Jazmine Sullivan released ‘Bust Your Windows.’

A dramatic waltz-tango rhythm and strings echoing Bizet's "Habanera" from 'Carmen' gave 'Bust Your Windows' its theatrical, almost operatic edge, with Jazmine Sullivan co-writing the track alongside producer Salaam Remi for her debut studio album, 'Fearless.' The song tells the story of a woman discovering her partner's infidelity and channeling that fury into destroying his belongings, delivered through Sullivan's powerhouse, emotionally layered vocal performance that set her apart from other R&B newcomers of the era.

Released as a digital download that September, the single became the second from 'Fearless' following the earlier success of "Need U Bad," and its accompanying music video, which premiered on BET's '106 & Park' that October, visualized the scorned aftermath of betrayal through scenes of Sullivan smashing her partner's possessions, everything from vinyl records to wine glasses, though notably stopping short of actually busting his car windows despite the title. The video went on to land at number 46 on BET's year-end countdown of the best videos from 2008.

The song reached number four on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and cracked the top 40 of the Hot 100, becoming Sullivan's most successful crossover single to date, and it earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song. Its cultural reach extended well beyond its original release, later getting a memorable cover by Amber Riley on 'Glee' and even earning praise from Stevie Wonder, who called it a modern classic years after its debut, cementing its place as one of the definitive breakup anthems of the late 2000s.
