When people picture the behavioral health workforce, they often think of psychiatrists and therapists. In reality, dozens of roles play a unique but crucial part in helping people with behavioral health challenges find recovery, stability, and dignity—from licensed clinicians who diagnose and treat to peer specialists with lived experience who help patients navigate the ups and downs of recovery.

Why this matters: California faces a persistent shortage of behavioral health workers, especially in rural and underserved areas. Across all behavioral health professions, HCAI’s 2026 annual workforce report projects the statewide shortage will grow to -38% by 2033, a gap of over 88,000 providers.

Without a strong, sustainable workforce, gaps in care will only worsen. Growing the pipeline, investing in non-clinical roles, and addressing burnout among current providers are essential to creating a system that is accessible, effective, and equitable for all Californians in need of care.

Our latest Essentials blog breaks down the different types of roles, what they do, the services they tend to provide in public systems, the credentials they need, and more. (Link in bio).
