It’s one of the most common questions Dr. Sean Smith hears — and in this video, he clears up a longstanding myth.

Breast implants don’t come with an automatic 10-year expiration date. If your implants are comfortable, you’re happy with your results and there are no concerns with the implants, reaching the 10-year mark alone doesn’t mean you need another surgery.

So why do some patients eventually have a second procedure?

Often, it’s because their goals or their body have changed. They may want a different implant size or shape, wish to add a breast lift, or address changes in their breasts that have occurred with pregnancy, weight fluctuations or aging.

Breast implants do require ongoing monitoring and aren’t considered lifetime devices, so regular follow-up remains important.

The calendar alone doesn’t determine when you need another surgery — your health, your implants and your goals do.
